At the exhibition “Intersection of Mastery” by Tam Sơn, Hanoia collaborates with artist Phạm Minh Hiếu to present the installation artwork “landscape,” inspired by the art of mosaic combined with lacquer craftsmanship. The piece recreates the scenery of Hanoi as seen from the balcony of the Press Club building—a place closely tied to Tam Sơn’s journey—while also expressing a perspective on movement, color, and light within the urban space.

At Tam Sơn’s exhibition Intersection of Mastery, Hanoia partners with artist Phạm Minh Hiếu to unveil the installation piece landscape. Building on Hiếu’s distinctive artistic path—where traditional craftsmanship meets cutting-edge technology—landscape seamlessly integrates mosaic art, lacquer techniques, and mechanical elements to portray a panoramic view of Hanoi as seen from the Press Club balcony, a site deeply connected to Tam Sơn’s story.

Beyond its visual narrative, the work also reflects the artist’s contemplation of time, conveyed through dynamic interplay of motion, color, and light within the city’s vibrant urban fabric.

“landscape” – A New Discourse of Creativity, Craftsmanship, and Engineering

“landscape” is a large-scale installation where stillness and motion intertwine. Composed of nearly 1,200 lacquered elements suspended in space by delicate threads, the work forms two interwoven layers: still and dynamic. The still scene—formed by trunks, branches, and foliage—evokes the serene tranquility of a Hanoi street corner. In contrast, the dynamic layer captures gentle movements: small birds hopping between branches and shimmering sunbeams dancing through the air.

Contributing to the creation of the artwork is an “invisible” element that adds a profound layer of meaning and fosters interaction between the piece and its viewers: air. It is the movement of the audience that harmonizes with the work, generating invisible currents that cause the suspended details to gently sway—evoking a sense that the seemingly ordinary and unseen can, in fact, be extraordinarily moving.

“landscape” is the result of an elaborate crafting process, bringing together the finest lacquer techniques executed by master artisans from the Hanoia workshop. The work showcases vivid hand-painted birds, shimmering golden sunbeams created through gold leaf application, antique effects on tree trunks, and nuanced color gradients across thousands of leaves achieved through scratch polishing and color-blending techniques. The meticulousness and precision of the piece are further reflected in the fact that all 1,200 individual elements are carefully numbered and arranged in a predetermined sequence to exactly fulfill Phạm Minh Hiếu’s intended visual composition.
