Hà Nội 5th October 2017 – A collaborative work of art of designer Yen Khe and Hanoia haute lacquer house will be present at an artistic auction organized by Christie’s in London on 18th October 2017. For the first time, the vivid creativeness and craftsmanship of excellence of contemporary Vietnam will be introduced by a well-known international auction house such as Christie’s.
Tran Nu Yen Khe is known internationally as a famous actress through a series of films directed by Tran Anh Hung (The Scent of Green Papaya, Cyclo, The Vertical Ray of the Sun…). Throughout her journey, she has combined her initial formation of interior architecture with her passion for cinema and has created a great number of decorative objects and movie costumes featuring innovative aesthetics. To join this Chinese and Asian Contemporary Design by Christie’s, she has coordinated with Hanoia, the leading haute lacquer house in Vietnam, to realize her creative idea. With two workshops based in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city, Hanoia has successfully preserved the traditional legacy left by the ancestors and revived the values of Vietnamese traditions in the world of today.
"Borderline" is the name of this exclusive work of art. Besides its functional values, "Borderline" has developed an imaginary world in poetry where traditional culture is expressed through contemporary design. On the conical form of Non – a Vietnamese traditional hat – runs a brillant vegetal pattern in perfect harmony with lacquer background which hides a drawing of barbed wire fence inlaid by gold leaf. The vivid colors – red and orange – recall the secular architectural heritage of pagodas as well as the actual effervescence of Vietnamese society. It is considered a strong symbol where exoticism meets reality and original nature confronts with border disputes. "Borderline" represents vitality of contemporary Vietnam.
Géraldine Lenain, International Director, Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art of Christie’s Paris shares : « The association of Hanoia and Yen Khe is a perfect match. Hanoia is the leading brand in Vietnam for the art of lacquer – couture lacquer. Hanoia brings in a contemporary vision and keeps the craftsmanship, with all its excellence and tradition. Yen Khe was trained in France as an interior architect at Ecole Camondo (France) and has worked on lots of projects that gather emotion and art of colors and shapes. Therefore, we have high expectations of their collaborative piece of art ».
